When setting up your email on a new device, you are asked to choose between IMAP and POP3. Choosing the wrong one can lead to "missing" emails or devices that don't stay in sync.
IMAP (Recommended)
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) leaves the original email on the server and simply "mirrors" it to your devices. This is the modern standard.
- Syncing: If you read an email on your phone, it shows as "read" on your laptop. If you delete it in one place, it's deleted everywhere.
- Multiple Devices: Perfect if you use a phone, tablet, and computer.
- Storage: Uses your hosting account's disk space because the mail stays on the server.
POP3 (Legacy)
POP3 (Post Office Protocol) downloads the email to your specific device and, by default, deletes it from the server.
- Syncing: There is no syncing. Actions taken on one device do not affect the other.
- Single Device: Only recommended if you only ever check your mail from one single computer.
- Storage: Frees up hosting space because the mail is moved to your computer's hard drive.
Which one should I choose?
For most users, IMAP is the correct choice because it keeps everything synced across phones and computers.
